Don't Dismiss Your Suffering

Sheree Phillips talks about suffering and grace. We have a tendency to minimize our sufferings because we don't think they compare to other types of suffering. But if we minimize suffering, we can inadvertently be minimizing grace. Suffering comes in degree, but grace doesn't....Keep Reading

The Coming Light

Constant friend, my soul's own darkness, constant still, my soul's repose In the alley of soul's shadow, lurks a monster of my own Chained by sinful thoughts immoral, chained by sinful deeds done bold Soul and spirit war between me, making war, my corpse gone cold...Keep Reading

Longing For a Culture of Grace

There is something that's been on my heart about the life of our church (and others) for some time. Although I've discussed it briefly in various contexts I've never really sat down to try and succinctly articulate what it is...here it goes. I hope this turns out to be helpful for you. Week in and week out, as we gather together to lift up our Savior with one voice as a church family there is something I long to see brought to maturity in our midst. It's something that's "thereish", but not really there yet. The best way I believe I've heard this expressed is with the idea of a culture of grace. As the body of Christ, I long for us to be part of a culture that exudes grace to all who are in our midst....Keep Reading

The Message of Redemption through Joshua

Yesterday’s message from Pastor Benny Phillips continues with the "Age of Heroes" series. I am thankful to God for this message of inspiration, hope, and redemption. We were reminded of God's immense power in how God uses His people to overcome many obstacles that are seemingly insurmountable. It is amazing how the gospel is connected to every story in scripture. Many of these stories help me see my need for redemption in my life - everyday....Keep Reading

How Should a Christian Respond to the Immigration Crisis? Part 1

By all accounts, thousands and thousands of children are entering the United States from Mexico every month. What has been a political issue for a long time has become something of a crisis. It is at the point that the government is asking for help from churches in the areas most affected. (See http://tinyurl.com/ow93le3) This issue has a lot of facets, not the least of which is the political jousting that has been going on for years in regards to border security. People are currently talking about this issue more than ever. Today I have seen a post about a ‘resort’ being created for the children who make it to America safely, and how that is a problem. The Gospel Coalition published a piece by a pastor named Felix Cabrera in Oklahoma calling for support in serving 1200 children being kept at a military facility in Oklahoma City. It was roundly criticized in the comments section for not focusing on the fact that the children shouldn’t be here in the first place. It has been a little bit alarming to see the lack of compassion from Christians towards these children, and really, illegal immigrants in general. ...Keep Reading

How to Know When Idolatry is Affecting Your Sense of Identity

Identity is who you are. It tells you what you are worth, why you are here, and how you should live. It provides roles and boundaries for your relationships; it provides goals and parameters for your lifestyle; it gives significance to your thoughts, desires, and behavior. Identity is something that can and should be ascribed to each of us by God alone, and the identity He has given us is image-bearers. We bear God’s image, which means we are His designated representatives to the rest of creation and to each other. We were created to know Him and, knowing Him, to help others know Him by relating to them in such a way that we show them a little bit of what God is like. Our painful experience, however, is quite opposite of this edenic view of humanity. Most people we know are, by nature, nothing like God as He says He is or as we need Him to be. In general, people are callous, selfish, hurtful. Rather than nurturing the things and people God created (Gen 2:15), we use them. Rather than demonstrating a loving commitment to the good of others, we demonstrate a loving commitment to ourselves. This is the unraveling of humanity described by Paul in Romans 1:18-33. What makes us so divergent? How do we become so anti-God and anti-others? How are we getting our identity so wrong?...Keep Reading

Reminders of the Gospel - TGCW14 Testimony

I went to the Gospel Coalition Women’s Conference on the book of Nehemiah. That still makes me laugh. Who teaches Nehemiah at a women’s conference? And beyond that, no one taught a single leadership principle! Not one. Because that isn’t the heart of Nehemiah or the overall story of the Bible: the story is God, in love, redeeming His people....Keep Reading

Jesus, the Man of Sorrows

Today we rehearsed a story of humiliation and triumph, in which Jesus Christ bore the penalty for sins that he did not commit in order to save the very people whose rejection of him led to his death (Isaiah 52-53)....Keep Reading

A Praying People

Along with evangelism prayer can often seem like the most excruciating discipline of a Christian's life. But perhaps unlike evangelism it is not so much a result of forgetful negligence, but rather our seemingly half-hearted, faith-deficient offerings before God that lead us to feel God's proverbial pebble in our shoe...Keep Reading

Anticipating 2032

History isn't very important to a lot of people. But my husband was a history major who has transferred his love of history to our family. Sometime I will have to blog about the competition five of our kids engaged in with the same college history professor… This morning at Redeemer Church history was on display. ...Keep Reading

Looking For That Needle Of Superiority

Do you remember the point I repeated my last post? Our faith-filled obedience to God pleases Him and sanctifies our work. The good news is that while the type of work we do differs, God's pleasure is the same whatever our work is!...Keep Reading

The Gift of Biblical Fellowship

"The gospel, applied to our hearts every day, frees us to be brutally honest with ourselves and with God. The assurance of His total forgiveness of our sins through the blood of Christ means we don't have to play defensive games anymore. We don't have to rationalize and excuse our sins. We can say we told a lie instead of saying we exaggerated a bit. We can admit an unforgiving spirit instead of continuing to blame our parents for our emotional distress. We can call sin exactly what it is, regardless of how ugly and shameful it may be, because we know that Jesus bore that sin in His body on the cross. With the assurance of total forgiveness through Christ, we have no reason to hide from our sins anymore."...Keep Reading
