Identity Trumps Motherhood: Sermon Recap

Bob Putman reviews Benny's sermon from this past Sunday about motherhood and identity. How God sees us is infinitely more important than how anyone else sees us, including ourselves. ...Keep Reading

What is Important This Christmas Part 1: To Sit at Jesus Feet

Well here it is...the holiday season. The traffic's getting busier, the office seems a bit more cheery, and, I confess, I'm playing Christmas music most of the time I'm in my car (at least until a few days before Christmas after I've overindulged in it). I've gotta say that I love this time of year. I love that many of us consciously spend more time with those we love. I love that aside from retail businesses on Black Friday and Christmas Eve, in general people (by the common grace of God) seem to genuinely consider others more. And yes, I love the music that proclaims the glories of our Savior's birth! But the reality is that this season can also be an energy-draining, anxiety-producing vortex....Keep Reading

Keeping the Home

At age 60 I remember the days when church women’s ministries were focused on Titus 2: 3-5 which in part teaches women to be “keepers at home.” In fact, I was one of those pastor’s wives who taught this passage in our own church’s women’s ministry. Honestly, I benefited from this. I gained a vision for my home as the primary focus of my gifts and ministry. I learned to push through not feeling creative or administrative enough to get it all done. God used other women in my life to inspire and help me overcome patterns of procrastination and I really did come to love the often mundane tasks of keeping a home running....Keep Reading

Welcome to the Priesthood

For hours our group of foreign and Chinese teachers drove south through rice paddies and terraced tea hills to the famed Yellow Mountains of east central China. My initial fascination worn thin through endless unfamiliarity, I felt I had been dropped on another planet and wished I could switch off my senses. But we kept driving and entered the town of Mt. Jihua (pronounced jo-hwah), ringed by eighty-one temples. Throngs of Buddhist worshipers crowded the streets for the September pilgrimage....Keep Reading

Image is Not Everything

Our culture gets it wrong when it comes to women and image. That is no surprise, and much has been said on the topic. Recently the Huffington Post did a piece on what tabloids would look like if they treated men the way they treated women. Westminster College has a well-researched article about beauty standards, women in the media, and how women internalize the “thin-beauty” standard....Keep Reading

More Than a Reference Point

If you've been around the church world long enough, you've probably heard someone somewhere talk about being "gospel-centered" - gospel-centered preaching, gospel-centered worship, gospel-centered counseling, gospel-centered everything. And you've probably had one of a number of reactions to these pretentious-sounding assertions of unique commitment to the gospel reactions that range from indignance at the implications regarding apparently non-gospel-centered churches and ministries to amusement at what sounds like an awfully simplistic approach to life and ministry. I initially reacted with a little of both and a lot of everything in between. I was at first a little confused at what people meant and why they were so adamant about it. But the more I learned, the more it made sense to me, and the more I liked it...until finally I decided “gospel-centered,” as a term, is just too small to capture what people are saying, that the relationship between the gospel and ministry is much more robust than mere centeredness. But before I explain what I think the gospel is to ministry, let me explain the idea of gospel-centeredness....Keep Reading

Babylon, Jerusalem, and the Kingdom of God

“Israel and Hamas broke their ceasefire today and resumed fighting. This means the war has now gone on for…let me just check my watch here. Is it July 31st? Ok that means the war has been going on for…3000 years.” That joke (roughly) was how Stephen Colbert began his show on Friday, and it was either hilarious or insensitive. But it was also illustrative of a far more important point, a point that Jesse made in his sermon on Sunday about the life of Daniel (the latest in our Age of Heroes series): earthly kingdoms are constantly in turmoil and war, and they all inevitably fade away. But the kingdom of God does not. The kingdom of God is eternal; the kingdom of God is righteous; the kingdom of God is here....Keep Reading

Two Things the Gospel Does for Us When We Suffer

The gospel does two things for us when we suffer: it comforts us, and it calls us. In my last post, I surveyed the glorious hope our identity in Christ gives us in the face of suffering:...Keep Reading

The Message of Redemption through Joshua

Yesterday’s message from Pastor Benny Phillips continues with the "Age of Heroes" series. I am thankful to God for this message of inspiration, hope, and redemption. We were reminded of God's immense power in how God uses His people to overcome many obstacles that are seemingly insurmountable. It is amazing how the gospel is connected to every story in scripture. Many of these stories help me see my need for redemption in my life - everyday....Keep Reading

What Our Identity in Christ Says About Our Suffering

The suffering in our lives keeps us from doing and experiencing many good things, and it often teaches us bad things. Suffering has the tendency to pervert our perception of the world around us. Children who grow up abused often have uniquely distorted views of God, self, and others. Those who suffer traumatic experiences in any stage of life often have difficulty engaging with life after the trauma. Chronic pain or illness can keep us from so much of what we could be doing if only we were well, and we wonder if we're doing well enough under the circumstances or failing to redeem what little time we have. In the end, we often ask, "Is there any value in the years ravaged by another's sin? Is there any value in a life only half-lived due to our own folly, inability, or disability? Is there any good in all the bad, and what about all the bad we see in the good? Do we or our lives amount to anything more than the cumulative effect of sin upon sin and pain upon pain, or are we nothing more than failures who have been failed by others, wounded, broken, and destined to perpetuate the process in others?"...Keep Reading

Why Image-Bearing Isn't Only About Responsibility

In my last article, I described our core identity in terms of being God's image-bearers, but if you survey the New Testament, you'll find its overarching understanding of our identity in Christ is that we are sons, co-heirs, siblings of Christ destined to become like Christ. So, we must ask the question: is the New Testament replacing the Old Testament image-bearer motif with an in-Christ adoption motif, or is something else happening? Of course, the answer is that nothing is being replaced. Rather, something is being fulfilled and filled-out....Keep Reading

How to Know When Idolatry is Affecting Your Sense of Identity

Identity is who you are. It tells you what you are worth, why you are here, and how you should live. It provides roles and boundaries for your relationships; it provides goals and parameters for your lifestyle; it gives significance to your thoughts, desires, and behavior. Identity is something that can and should be ascribed to each of us by God alone, and the identity He has given us is image-bearers. We bear God’s image, which means we are His designated representatives to the rest of creation and to each other. We were created to know Him and, knowing Him, to help others know Him by relating to them in such a way that we show them a little bit of what God is like. Our painful experience, however, is quite opposite of this edenic view of humanity. Most people we know are, by nature, nothing like God as He says He is or as we need Him to be. In general, people are callous, selfish, hurtful. Rather than nurturing the things and people God created (Gen 2:15), we use them. Rather than demonstrating a loving commitment to the good of others, we demonstrate a loving commitment to ourselves. This is the unraveling of humanity described by Paul in Romans 1:18-33. What makes us so divergent? How do we become so anti-God and anti-others? How are we getting our identity so wrong?...Keep Reading
