Freedom to Change: A Sermon Review

Jesse began by talking about the concept of change. Turning away from unwanted behavior is something common to everyone. Whether it is silly habits, or more serious addictions, we all have aspects of behavior that we want to modify. 12 step programs abound for every sort of sin, addiction or compulsion. Many of these programs borrow from biblical wisdom in their approach, and can be helpful. However, behavior modification, while important at times in and of itself, is not what is most important. The human condition requires more than behavior modification; it requires redemption and sanctification....Keep Reading

Summary of Jesse Phillips' Ordination Service

Sunday was an historic day at Redeemer Church, as we celebrated the ordination of Jesse Phillips, son of Pastor Benny Phillips and his wife Sheree. Numerous visitors were present for the service, including guests from Metro Life Church, Orlando, where Jesse grew up and was called to ministry....Keep Reading

Babylon, Jerusalem, and the Kingdom of God

“Israel and Hamas broke their ceasefire today and resumed fighting. This means the war has now gone on for…let me just check my watch here. Is it July 31st? Ok that means the war has been going on for…3000 years.” That joke (roughly) was how Stephen Colbert began his show on Friday, and it was either hilarious or insensitive. But it was also illustrative of a far more important point, a point that Jesse made in his sermon on Sunday about the life of Daniel (the latest in our Age of Heroes series): earthly kingdoms are constantly in turmoil and war, and they all inevitably fade away. But the kingdom of God does not. The kingdom of God is eternal; the kingdom of God is righteous; the kingdom of God is here....Keep Reading

God's Relentless Mercy - The Story of Jonah

On Sunday, we heard from Jesse Phillips to kick start our summer series, “Age of Heroes: Classic Bible Stories and What They Really Mean.” He took us through the story of Jonah, beginning by explaining to us what Jonah ISN’T about. Often we hear children’s ministry versions of classic Bible heroes and the supposed lessons that God wants to teach us about them. Jonah is no different, and so he read us a typical Sunday school story meant to convey how “God wanted to teach Jonah a lesson” by sending a whale swallow him. Moral of the story? Obey God or he will punish you....Keep Reading
