Longing For a Culture of Grace

There is something that's been on my heart about the life of our church (and others) for some time. Although I've discussed it briefly in various contexts I've never really sat down to try and succinctly articulate what it is...here it goes. I hope this turns out to be helpful for you. Week in and week out, as we gather together to lift up our Savior with one voice as a church family there is something I long to see brought to maturity in our midst. It's something that's "thereish", but not really there yet. The best way I believe I've heard this expressed is with the idea of a culture of grace. As the body of Christ, I long for us to be part of a culture that exudes grace to all who are in our midst....Keep Reading

Keeping the Home

At age 60 I remember the days when church women’s ministries were focused on Titus 2: 3-5 which in part teaches women to be “keepers at home.” In fact, I was one of those pastor’s wives who taught this passage in our own church’s women’s ministry. Honestly, I benefited from this. I gained a vision for my home as the primary focus of my gifts and ministry. I learned to push through not feeling creative or administrative enough to get it all done. God used other women in my life to inspire and help me overcome patterns of procrastination and I really did come to love the often mundane tasks of keeping a home running....Keep Reading

Should Women Be Leaders in the Church?

An automated spiritual gifts test once assumed I was a man. It was a generic test, so at the end, the tally of my results indicated (to the formula of the test results) that I should serve as a teaching pastor or lead men’s ministry. I cried, and the elder leading our class had no idea how to console me. In his mumbling, he said this, “God didn’t mess up and you aren’t disobeying God by being a strong leader and teacher.” But as a professing complimentarian, I was confused. Should women be leaders and teachers in the church?...Keep Reading

Counseling: The Gospel for the Details

So far this series, we’ve discussed how the gospel is more than a reference point for ministry, and we have seen how that shapes our approach to preaching. This week, we discuss how that affects our approach to counseling....Keep Reading

Preaching More Than Moralism

Last week, we looked at the gospel as Scripture’s paradigm for ministry in general. Today, we are looking at the gospel as Scripture’s paradigm for preaching " for interpreting and applying God’s Word for God’s people on God’s terms....Keep Reading

More Than a Reference Point

If you've been around the church world long enough, you've probably heard someone somewhere talk about being "gospel-centered" " gospel-centered preaching, gospel-centered worship, gospel-centered counseling, gospel-centered everything. And you've probably had one of a number of reactions to these pretentious-sounding assertions of unique commitment to the gospel " reactions that range from indignance at the implications regarding apparently non-gospel-centered churches and ministries to amusement at what sounds like an awfully simplistic approach to life and ministry. I initially reacted with a little of both and a lot of everything in between. I was at first a little confused at what people meant and why they were so adamant about it. But the more I learned, the more it made sense to me, and the more I liked it...until finally I decided “gospel-centered,” as a term, is just too small to capture what people are saying, that the relationship between the gospel and ministry is much more robust than mere centeredness. But before I explain what I think the gospel is to ministry, let me explain the idea of gospel-centeredness....Keep Reading

When Prayer Isn't Answered...My Way

Our friend, Frank, has been doing a Sunday evening mini-series on prayer. While it's likely I heard him do a variation of these messages in the 90′s at a former church, his words have been freshly challenging and encouraging me. As a small group of us sat our family room listening to him teach last night, the Lord began to show me how easily I'm tempted to discouragement when God doesn't answer my prayers my way. Then I started thinking about Uncle Rocky....Keep Reading

Anticipating 2032

History isn't very important to a lot of people. But my husband was a history major who has transferred his love of history to our family. Sometime I will have to blog about the competition five of our kids engaged in with the same college history professor This morning at Redeemer Church history was on display. ...Keep Reading

Looking For That Needle Of Superiority

Do you remember the point I repeated my last post? Our faith-filled obedience to God pleases Him and sanctifies our work. The good news is that while the type of work we do differs, God's pleasure is the same whatever our work is!...Keep Reading

They are Redeemer Church

I don't remember the first time we met him, but it was close to 10 years ago. Alex was just out of high school and wanted to be a professional musician. He was giving his life to this goal - and it resulted in him leaning away from the church in which his family had been involved for years. ...Keep Reading

The Gift of Biblical Fellowship

"The gospel, applied to our hearts every day, frees us to be brutally honest with ourselves and with God. The assurance of His total forgiveness of our sins through the blood of Christ means we don't have to play defensive games anymore. We don't have to rationalize and excuse our sins. We can say we told a lie instead of saying we exaggerated a bit. We can admit an unforgiving spirit instead of continuing to blame our parents for our emotional distress. We can call sin exactly what it is, regardless of how ugly and shameful it may be, because we know that Jesus bore that sin in His body on the cross. With the assurance of total forgiveness through Christ, we have no reason to hide from our sins anymore."...Keep Reading

Praying for our First Miracle

Yesterday was a mixture of joy and sorrow for Redeemer Church. Have we changed our name to Ultimate Power? No. That's just the name of our new location. Who would have ever thought of checking at marital arts studios to see about renting space for a church? We're glad someone did. It's a great situation for us, and gives us room to grow. We're grateful....Keep Reading
