I Am Inadequate

Up until a couple of weeks before the birth of my son, Silas, I worked full time as an orthopedic nurse in a large hospital in Orlando. I took care of a large number of people, 90% of whom had surgery to fix broken bones; people who had been in horrible car accidents, people who had broken bones from slipping and falling at Disney, and a large population of the elderly who came in for broken hips. But there is one patient I will remember vividly, and they weren’t there for anything orthopedic....Keep Reading

Training New Disciples to Make Disciples

Like my good friend Alex Thermenos, you may have thought that last week's post was the final post in this series on making disciples. Now this is understandable. I mean, after touching base with the lost, talking to them, enjoying meals with them at your dinner table, teaching them how the gospel relates to their lives, tying them into the fellowship of the church, and calling them to trust in Jesus alone for their salvation what else could disciple-making entail? Well, I believe the Bible reveals to us one more crucial step. Today I will close our series on making disciples by explaining how training new disciples to make disciples themselves is a necessary final step in this process....Keep Reading

Calling the Lost to Trust in Jesus

This is what making disciples of Jesus all boils down to. In fact, there is a real sense in which this is the only absolutely necessary step in the process to making disciples. Everything about this process hinges on whether or not our lost friends, family members, co-workers, and neighbors, by God's sovereign grace, place their trust in Jesus, and Jesus alone, for their personal salvation. This is the step that we've been building towards all along. And from the beginning of the process this is what we must be prayerfully aiming for....Keep Reading

Errands, Tantrums, and the Gospel

My sister’s baby had a fever, so I ran by her house the other week to pick up two of her kids and take them with me on my errands to give her a little break. They were prattling on like little girls do, talking about nothing and everything. On our way home, we were listening to a local Christian radio station and Everfound’s “God of the Impossible” came on. Now, I’m not a fan of Christian radio per se, but the lyrics got me thinking about my life and what I was doing with it. “Here I am, Lord send me. I won’t look back cause I was made to be a part of the impossible, you’re God of the impossible…I dare to believe in incredible things, I’m ready to go, ready to go.” As I was driving, listening to mindless chatter and my son babbling in the back seat, I thought, “Gosh, there is so much I could do with my life. I could go to Africa and take care of orphans, or go back to Haiti and work at the orphanage there. Or even Bolivia, learning Spanish and preaching the Gospel in La Paz. Yet here I am, going to Walmart and buying groceries and living a pretty mindless life. I want to do GREAT THINGS!” All the while the song kept playing in the background…here I am, Lord send me....Keep Reading

Teaching the Gospel to the Lost

Over the last few weeks, I've been painting a picture of how we can practically apply our wonderful responsibility of sharing the gospel with the lost in a simple, step-by-step approach. By following these steps I believe each of us can obey Jesus' radical call to make disciples by simply interacting with the lost people who are already in our lives in intentional, Jesus-imitating, gospel-focused ways. So after we intentionally touch base with the lost, begin to winsomely talk with the lost, and seek to sincerely befriend the lost by interacting with them in meaningful ways at our dinner (or breakfast, lunch, snack, coffee, etc.) tables, we must teach them about the truths of the gospel in a way that relates to their lives....Keep Reading

Preaching More Than Moralism

Last week, we looked at the gospel as Scripture’s paradigm for ministry in general. Today, we are looking at the gospel as Scripture’s paradigm for preaching for interpreting and applying God’s Word for God’s people on God’s terms....Keep Reading

Inviting Sinners to Your Table

Who would you invite into your home for dinner? Perhaps more significantly, who would you not invite over for dinner? If we're honest, most of us probably have some real restrictions on who makes it to our dinner table. It's one thing to have people come over for a large event, it's another thing to have a few people over for the game, but we tend to reserve our dinner table to a select few...and this is normal. Sharing a meal with someone is a more or less universal way of communicating a desire for friendship and intimacy with others. And this is ultimately because God has made it so....Keep Reading

Babylon, Jerusalem, and the Kingdom of God

“Israel and Hamas broke their ceasefire today and resumed fighting. This means the war has now gone on for…let me just check my watch here. Is it July 31st? Ok that means the war has been going on for…3000 years.” That joke (roughly) was how Stephen Colbert began his show on Friday, and it was either hilarious or insensitive. But it was also illustrative of a far more important point, a point that Jesse made in his sermon on Sunday about the life of Daniel (the latest in our Age of Heroes series): earthly kingdoms are constantly in turmoil and war, and they all inevitably fade away. But the kingdom of God does not. The kingdom of God is eternal; the kingdom of God is righteous; the kingdom of God is here....Keep Reading

Talking Winsomely With the Lost

Last week, we discussed the importance of engaging with the lost with the intent of making disciples of Jesus. We talked about how we need to make it a priority to prayerfully and intentionally touch base with those around us, just as Jesus did. Just as Jesus "looked up" towards Zacchaeus as he passed through Jericho on his way to Jerusalem (see Luke 19:5) we must take the time and effort to look towards the lost that we pass by every day in our neighborhoods, at work, or even at home....Keep Reading
