Recent studies have shown that while most parents feel like they are doing an adequate job parenting, they also face growing concerns. Issues such as internet safety and sexting were foreign to the previous generation, and are rising concerns for millienial parents. Most parents of pre-teens say being a parent is a central part of their identity yet admit they seem to enjoying their kids less as time goes on. What is a parent to do in the face of their child's pending transition to adulthood?
Join Benny and Sheree Phillips, a pastor and wife with seven children, sixteen grandchildren and authors of four books on parenting and related topics, as they host a free seminar that will seek to help parents navigate the sometimes rough adolescent waters.
"I remember being a young parent and being overwhelmed at very thought of my children one day becoming teenagers," said Benny Phillips. "We had been taught by our culture to expect rebellion as normal, and felt like there must be a better way. Although we certainly made mistakes along the way, we learend to embrace and enjoy the journey with our kids through one of life’s great transitions. We hope this seminar helps parents develop a grid to better understand the unique opportunities and challenges of the teenage years."
The seminar will take place Saturday, June 10 from 9 AM to 1 PM and will feature a session by Sheree Phillips, who homeschooled seven children, co-authored two books with Benny and wrote two books of her own on the topics of womanhood and motherhood. Also speaking is Pam Putnam, the founder of Pam Putnam Mentoring, LLC. Pam has been practicing Christ-centered spiritual mentoring in the Lake Nona area since 2010 and will be speaking on "Understanding the Teenage Brain." The schedule also allots time for an interactive period of questions and answers. The seminar promises an opportunity for interaction with seasoned parents who have experienced the full range of parental failures and successes.
A special informal session will take place that evening (6:30-8:30pm) at the home of the Phillips’s. Parents are welcome to bring your pre-teens and teens for further discussion on the unique opportunities and challenges of adolescence, as well as some winsome and open dialogue about the common struggles in the parent-teen relationship.
About the Speakers: Benny Phillips has been a pastor for over 40 years years and married to Sheree for 44 years. Benny and Sheree co-authored Raising Kids Who Hunger for God and Walking With the Wise. Sheree also authored A Royal Calling and The High Calling of Motherhood.
